With decades of teaching kids and adults in Caringbah, we’ve become very familiar with the local area and surrounding suburbs.
Caringbah is a suburb in the Local Government Area of the Sutherland Shire, just a short distance from Miranda. The town was originally called “Highfield.” It’s unclear whether the name came from a person’s position or an early resident. The name “Caringbah” was eventually used in 1911, (when a new tram line opened from Cronulla to Sutherland).
The Caringbah district is a mixed-use area with residential, commercial and industrial sectors. The Commercial District of the community features many small businesses providing professional services while an expansive Industrial/Commercial Area lies in Taren Point Road and its surrounding areas. With these districts located near public transportation points like the railway station, there are also plenty of shopping opportunities near President Avenue intersections that weave together Kingsway Street and Port Hacking Roads South.
The town has plenty of restaurants and pubs for nightlife, along with ample amenities. There are small shops in the central district for all simple daily needs, but larger shopping centres like Westfield Miranda can be easily reached by train or just a short drive away.
Several great schools are available in Caringbah, ranging from primary to high school level. The options for high school in Caringbah are vast and varied. For a more competitive education, there is only one selective secondary school: Caringbah High School; for those who want to pursue their studies without the stress of an entrance exam, you can find schools such as De La Salle College or Endeavour Sports High School which offer a less pressured environment with great facilities available on site. There’s also no shortage of primary schooling choices either – whether you’re searching for religious instruction at Our Lady Fatima Catholic Primary Public or just wanting something closer to home like Laguna Street Public School.
Located in Caringbah and overlooking the beautiful Yowie Bay, Camellia Gardens is a favourite with Shire residents and visitors alike. In March 2014, E.G. Waterhouse National Camellia Gardens was named by the International Camellia Society as an International Garden of Excellence! Only one other such garden exists in New South Wales–Camellias are amazing plants that will soon be blooming all over Sydney for everyone to enjoy springtime weather!
Cronulla beach is only a short trip away, so if you’re looking for excellent beaches in the Greater Sydney region then look no further. It’s nice to be close enough that we don’t have to deal with overcrowded beaches but far enough inland where it doesn’t feel too suburban or landlocked like other suburbs closer by. The suburb is also home to some great walking and cycling adventures, as well as a large number of outstanding parks in its southern quarter, including Lilli Pilli and Port Hacking.
